Broad Rock Middle School Annual Report
School Year 2024–2025
Our Mission
At Broad Rock Middle School, our mission is to provide all students with engaging learning opportunities in a safe educational environment that inspires them to take intellectual risks, achieve personal excellence, and participate in responsible citizenship. This mission guides our work every day and fuels our commitment to helping every student thrive.
Our Beliefs
- We believe students thrive when they are given opportunities to take ownership of their learning. Risk-taking and choice empower students, fostering not only deeper understanding but also confidence and independence.
- We believe in a school community where adults truly know and support students as whole individuals, working to meet both their academic and basic needs.
- We believe that personalized instruction and student choice in both the content and demonstration of learning increases engagement and helps all learners succeed.
- We believe that students achieve their best when they are actively engaged in relevant, meaningful learning experiences.
Celebrating a Year of Growth and Achievement
The 2024–2025 school year was a time of meaningful growth, achievement, and community building at Broad Rock Middle School. As a unified Grades 6–8 learning community, our students excelled academically, artistically, athletically, and socially. We remain committed to creating a safe, inclusive environment where every student feels known, valued, and challenged.
Academic Rigor and Excellence
At Broad Rock, academic excellence is grounded in high expectations and engaging, student-centered instruction. Our dedicated teachers continue to challenge students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and persevere through complex problems.
Over the past two years, the introduction of Illustrative Math and My Perspectives/SAVVAS curriculum resources in Math and ELA has transformed our classrooms. Students are now working collaboratively to solve multi-step math problems and engage in rich discussions around rigorous texts. Many students are enrolled in accelerated math courses, including Algebra 1, earning high school credit while developing critical problem-solving skills. In ELA, students have made notable strides in analytical reading, writing, and communication.
This year, we launched OpenSciEd in all Science classes. The new curriculum has increased student engagement through hands-on labs, inquiry-based learning, and small-group discussions that promote scientific reasoning. Students have demonstrated strong comprehension and problem-solving abilities, and our teachers are eager to continue their professional development with this dynamic resource.
Unified Arts: Creativity and Exploration
Broad Rock students benefit from a robust Unified Arts program that nurtures creativity and supports 21st-century learning. From Project Lead the Way STEM courses to a variety of visual and performing arts classes, students are encouraged to explore their interests and apply their learning in real-world contexts.
We are proud to offer high school credit opportunities in Spanish, French, and Coding, preparing students for future academic success. Technology courses and hands-on electives give students the chance to innovate, create, and collaborate in meaningful ways.
Performing Arts Highlights
- The 8th Grade Band earned an "Excellent" 4-star rating at the RI State Band Festival.
- The 7th & 8th Grade Orchestra earned a "Superior" 5-star rating at the RI State Festival.
- Students brought the house down with a vibrant production of Seussical Jr., showcasing talents in acting, singing, and dancing.
Social-Emotional Learning and Student Well-Being
Creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment is central to our work. At BRMS, we want every student to feel connected, accepted, and supported.
To that end, we offer a wide range of clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities that allow students to explore their interests and build relationships outside the classroom. Our caring mental health consultation team plays a key role in ensuring students have the emotional support they need to thrive.
A school-wide goal is for every student to form a strong connection with at least one trusted adult in our school community—a goal we continue to prioritize each year.
