Broad Rock Middle School Annual Review
As we reflect on another successful school year, we are proud of all that our students, staff, and families have accomplished together. From outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, music, the arts, and service, to continued growth in student learning, Broad Rock Middle School remains a place where students are encouraged to challenge themselves, discover their passions, and grow as learners and leaders.
Academic Growth and Achievement
Broad Rock students made meaningful academic progress this year as a result of their hard work and the dedication of our teachers and staff.
English Language Arts
Our students demonstrated continued growth on the RICAS English Language Arts assessment, with:
● Cohort growth across grades 6–8.
● District growth among students receiving special education services occurring almost exclusively in grades 6–8.
These results reflect our ongoing commitment to strengthening literacy instruction and supporting every learner.
Mathematics
Students also showed encouraging progress in mathematics, including:
● Growth in district math scores at Grade 6 (amongst the highest in the state)
● Growth in math achievement among students receiving special education services at Grade 7
To further strengthen mathematical understanding, Broad Rock introduced a Grade 7 Geometry course this year. This addition provides focused instruction in key geometry standards while allowing core mathematics classes to emphasize the foundational concepts and skills necessary for success in Algebra I, supporting the goals outlined in the district's Strategic Plan.
Science
This school year marked the second full year of implementing the OpenSciEd science curriculum. With ongoing professional development support through GEMS-NET, teachers continued to provide students with rich, inquiry-based learning experiences centered on investigations, data analysis, and student-driven sense-making.
As students engaged more deeply with scientific practices, they demonstrated increasing confidence in explaining concepts, analyzing evidence, and articulating their understanding of science.
Writing Across the Curriculum
Broad Rock also continued its schoolwide initiative to embed writing across all content areas. Teachers intentionally incorporated writing strategies that help students organize their thinking, communicate their ideas effectively, and strengthen their responses to essays and extended-response questions. This shared focus has supported student growth in both writing and critical thinking across disciplines.
Athletic Excellence
Our student-athletes demonstrated incredible dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the year. Highlights included:
● Boys Soccer captured the Rhode Island Middle School State Championship.
● Boys and Girls Track & Field both earned State Championship titles, showcasing outstanding individual and team performances.
These accomplishments reflect the hard work of our athletes, coaches, and families who support them every step of the way.
Celebrating Music and the Arts
Many Broad Rock students continue to pursue their passions through music and the arts. We are continually impressed by the number of students who participate in Band, Orchestra, and Chorus, dedicating countless hours to rehearsals, performances, and refining their talents. Their commitment enriches our school community and demonstrates the perseverance required to achieve excellence.
Throughout the year, students shared their talents during Band, Orchestra, and Chorus concerts, as well as performances by our Jazz Band and Vivace ensembles.
Several students successfully auditioned for the prestigious Rhode Island Music Educators Association (RIMEA) All-State Festival, earning places in the All-State Orchestra and Chorus ensembles, while others were selected for the RIMEA Honors Orchestra. These accomplishments represent some of the highest musical honors available to middle school students in Rhode Island.
Creativity also flourished through the visual and performing arts. This year's production of The Little Mermaid showcased the remarkable talent, collaboration, and dedication of our student performers, stage crew, and directors. Their hard work resulted in a memorable production enjoyed by our entire community.
Leadership Through Service
Broad Rock students continue to demonstrate that leadership extends beyond the classroom.
Our National Junior Honor Society members contributed more than 2,400 hours of volunteer service to our school and community this year. Their commitment to service reflects compassion, responsibility, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact.
This year, Broad Rock proudly inducted 87 students. We congratulate all of our NJHS students and thank them for the countless ways they have strengthened our school community.
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate this year's accomplishments, we are equally excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. The success of Broad Rock Middle School is built upon the collective efforts of our students, staff, families, and community partners. Together, we have fostered a school culture where students are encouraged to challenge themselves academically, explore new interests, lead through service, and support one another.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this school year such a success. We look forward to building on this momentum as we continue to inspire every student to learn, lead, and thrive.
